Hello Obrunis!

Obruni means white person or even just westerner in general.

Ginatu is a master seamstress in Accra.
She's making us custom clothes from the fabric we bought at the market!
Can't wait to get the finished product.

Here is Ginatu's home and workshop.
Such a beautiful setting!

Ginatu's drawings of my top & skirt combo and my blazer.

Here's Rex Antonio making a bracelet for me.
Hand-made ones are only 2 cedi...that's about a dollar USD.

This is Alex.
There are TONS of artists here...some are trained and some are not.
Regardless, the paintings are always amazing and people are proud of their work.

Tons more photos to come!
Sorry for any long lulls in my blogging...we are a busy bunch of Obrunis!

Akwaaba!

Akwaaba means "welcome" in Twi,
one of the languages spoken by most people here.
I've heard it about 150 times since landing in Ghana Wednesday morning.

Scrabble must be big here.
Or maybe they just know that Westerners are crazy about it.

The huge variety in the size/shape/weight/height
of items carried on women's heads is incredible.
I don't know how they do it...maybe someone will teach me.

The food here is insanely good.
Breakfast is super tame, but it includes best pineapple I've ever had.
Yellow and white varieties.
I didn't even know there was more than one kind of pineapple.
And how cool is it to eat a banana that actually grew in the country you're in?!
Pretty cool actually.
And delicious.

These are the girls of the Morning Star School in Accra.
The school is one of the best private schools in Ghana for K-9th grade.
The students are adorable and so sweet and smart and awesome.

Here is one such student :)

The boys LOVED Matko.
They cleverly turned him into a human basketball goal.
Ahh the perks of being six and a half feet tall.

And here we are with the director of the school (a UGA grad woof woof).
This is the social work section of our UGA group.

Ghana is the best and I know it will only get better.
More to come!
